Breast Surgical Fund
In 2006 the Revd Simon Everett, Rector of the Iwerne Valley Benefice in Dorset raised £10,634 by riding the length of Britain in three weeks from Land's End to John O'Groats.
On his return in November he presented cheques of £5,317 each to Professor Ian Fentiman, Consultant Breast Surgeon at Guy's and St Thomas' for the Breast Cancer Surgical fund, and to Mr John Miles, Chairman of the Bristol Prostate Cancer Care and Research Centre Appeal.
He gave a presentation on his journey to his community of five villages who had generously sponsored his ride or made donations towards his running costs.
Accompanied by a friend in the first, hardest week to Bristol, Simon travelled on his own as he went further north. He wasn't, however, lonely: "There were always new things to concentrate on and lots of different people to meet."
As well as raising money for two worthwhile causes the trip enabled Simon to visit villages and towns that were new to him, and to see highlights including the Iron Bridge, birth place of the industrial revolution, the Electric Brae optical illusion in Ayreshire and the Anderton Boat lift, known as the cathedral of the waterways.
Over the course of his ride he experienced every kind of weather, the most terrifying as he travelled from the River Clyde to the West Coast of Scotland. He said: "On mid-summer's day I encountered the worst weather I have ever had the misfortune to ride in - winds of 90mph and monsoon type rains."
Despite being blown off his bike, fighting against headwinds and battling uphill in all kinds of weather, Simon enjoyed his trip: "It was a most refreshing, invigorating and spiritually rejuvenating time."
