Cuban Revolution Cycle
While many were turning their thoughts to festive activities over Christmas, Nick Collins of GVA Grimley was trying to settle a stomach churning at the thought of a 10 day, 360km fundraising cycling expedition in Cuba to support one of his colleagues, Kay Booker.
Kay has been fighting cancer for four years, so Nick decided to dedicate his challenge to her and asked Kay to nominate a suitable charity. As much of her treatment has taken place at either Guy’s or St Thomas’ she chose Canhelp, the Charity fund which helps Guy's and St Thomas' stay at the forefront of research and treatment in the fight against cancer.
After a 10 hour flight to Havana and one night to recover, the big day arrived. 21 cyclists gathered to take part in the adventure (with five locals on hand to support). Nick said: "En route we experienced some seriously hazardous off-road terrain and some equally hazardous sub standard roads, not to mention dodging the large American Chevys and Buicks still on the road from the days of the revolution.
"Over the course of 10 days we passed buildings that have remained untouched for more than half a century, and experienced stifling heat. Stunning scenery and the friendliness and pride that the Cubans feel for their country however made it more than worthwhile.
"On 18 November we arrived at the Caribbean Sea in Trinidad, some 350kms from the Cuban capital of Havana and completed the challenge. A day I won’t forget, nor repeat in a hurry - the fittest cyclist passed out toward the end, not from too many mojitos, due to exhaustion, so I was pleased with my achievement!"
Nick raised an incredible £ 4,452.56 for Canhelp which is being put towards a phyiotherapist who will look at an exercise programme to help people who have had surgery for lung cancer.
