Evelina Appeal: Sports Fundraising
- Colin Tuckwell, Land's End to John O'Groats
- Graham Bright, British 10k London Run
- Louise Prew, adidas Silverstone Half Marathon
Without life saving surgery at the Evelina Colin Tuckwell's son Zac would not have survived. He was born with aortic coarctation - dangerous narrowing of the heart valves.
To show their gratitude to all the staff who took care of Zac, Colin and wife Lois decided they would like to raise funds for the Appeal. Being a keen cyclist Colin had always wanted to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats, so he undertook the challenge with Lois as his support driver and Zac as her assistant.
Colin's ride took a saddle sore nine days, with pit stops at campsites along the 1004 mile route. He was lucky enough not to sustain a single puncture and remembers the beautiful scenery on the west coast of Scotland as it whizzed past.
Colin said: "The trip was extremely satisfying and a great adventure, and we're pleased we were able to raise so much for the children's hospital." Coverage in his local paper, support from friends in his cycle club and donations from colleagues and family ensured that Colin raised over £1,150.
Graham Bright was born 8 weeks prematurely at Guys hospital in 1976. He weighed little more than a pound and was very poorly, surviving on life support for around six weeks and then in an incubator for several more.
Fast forward 31 years and Graham is now a father himself who wanted to do something to say: "thank you to the staff, who were excellent and saved my life."
Somewhat daunted by the prospect of a full marathon, and not being able to find someone to run behind him with a stretcher, Graham chose the British 10k London Run for his first sponsored event.
One of the first in line he lined up in front of the other 27,000 runners and set off nice and steady, eventually passing the men dressed as Elvis who had lapped him earlier. He struggled at the 6 or 7 kilometre marker with a stitch, but found his second wind and picked up the speed. Of his accomplishment Graham said: "I completed the run without stopping, and that for me was the biggest achievement of the day."
Finishing strongly despite forgetting his sports socks and racing in workwear, Graham raised £450 for the Evelina Appeal and said: "I really appreciate what is done for children at the hospital, and having two children myself I understand exactly how important causes like the Tiny Lives campaign are."
When her daughter Tippi made a full recovery from encephalitis and other complications Louise Prew made a promise that she would do something to help raise funds for the Evelina in thanks for the amazing care they received.
As a newcomer to running she decided to take part in the Adidas Silverstone Half Marathon with friend Lis Palmer. Louise said: “It was a great race, inspirational for many reasons and I'd do it again tomorrow...next stop the Marathon!” Together the pair raised a fantastic £479.
