Lane Fox Respiratory Unit
The Lane Fox Respiratory Unit at St Thomas’ reopened in January 2005 following a £1 million refurbishment. The refurbishment was made possible with funding of £624,000 from the Lane Fox Respiratory Unit Patient's Association (managed by the Charity), £340,000 from Guy’s and St Thomas' Charity, and £100,000 from the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
The unit, which is the largest in the country, provides a specialist service for chronic respiratory failure predominantly arising from chest wall or neuromuscular disease.
Improvements to the unit include two consulting rooms to allow patient confidentiality and much needed storage space. Improved bathroom facilities comprise a shower room and washrooms with adaptable fittings, allowing people with limited mobility greater independence.
The 14 bed unit has four respiratory intensive care beds and access to a garden area. A central nurse station has been created together with a dedicated space for physiotherapists, doctors and speech therapists.
Patients have been very positive about the refurbishment. Julie Bailey, who attends regular check ups at the clinic, said: "We're very grateful for all the support from the charities towards the refurbishment - it has made it a much better place to visit."
