Lindsay Williams' Double Ironman Triathlon
Lindsay Williams, 46, an interest rate swap trader at Lloyd’s TSB, completed the Double Ironman Triathlon on 1 and 2 August 2009 and raised £1200 for the Evelina Children’s Hospital.
Lindsay had already completed the Single Ironman the previous year, but decided to step up to the next level in 2009. He said: “I just craved something that was a bit more challenging – that would push me to the limit.”
Lindsay is a member of Thames Turbo Triathlon Club and had read a moving story on the club website by a man named Roger Barr, whose baby son had recently been treated at the Evelina Intensive Care Unit for intusseception, a blockage of the intestine.
Roger was so impressed with his son’s treatment at the Evelina that he appealed to people to come up with ways in which they could sponsor him.
Having read his appeal, Lindsay decided to take up the challenge himself and do the Double Ironman Triathlon in aid of the Evelina Children’s Hospital.
The event took place in Lichfield, Staffordshire. It started at 6am in the morning and contestants had to swim for 4.8 miles, cycle for 224 miles and run for 52 miles; all within 35 hours. Lindsay started at 1pm on Saturday 1 August and finished at 5pm on Sunday; 27 hours and 32 minutes later.
Lindsay said: “I was overwhelmed by the emotion of finishing and I’m not embarrassed to say that tears were shed at the release of so much pent up mental pressure and physical hardship.
"I had to dig really deep at times, especially around 3am on the bike with still over 100 miles to ride and experiencing bad stomach pains, but I really mean it when I say that I thought of all the amazing comments and fantastic amount of money that had been raised and there was no way I could let myself down by not finishing.
"An hour or so later and my stomach pains had gone and there was a beautiful sunrise and morning mist patches and suddenly I had a big smile on my face and felt a rush of adrenaline.”
