Researching the genetic make-up of Polio
A three year research project will tackle poliomyelitis which the World Health Organisation is striving to eradicate. The research has been funded with £136,000 from a £218,915 legacy bequeathed to the Charity by Mr Edward Callan.
Poliomyelitis is typically caused by poliovirus and affects children and young adults in developing countries causing paralysis of muscles, resulting in loss of mobility, limps and difficulty in breathing.
Consultant virologist Dr William Tong of Guy’s and St Thomas’ is examining such viruses from laboratories in the Far East and the UK in order to investigate what genetic characteristics define why these viruses cause paralysis in some patients, but only mild disease in others.
The ultimate aim is to develop a better diagnostic test for poliomyelitis and to find ways of preventing the spread of the infection. Dr Tong said:“We are grateful to Edward Callan for his legacy which could help to stop the spread of this debilitating condition.”
