The use of surface parasternal intercostals muscle electromyogram recordings (EMGps) to assess disease severity in paediatric and adult asthma
Location: King's College London
Award: £150,221
Start date: 01/02/2008
End date: The final report is due in November 2011
Project intentions: The grant will help researchers in their aim to develop a new method of assessing the severity and control of asthma. Tests involve the level of electrical activity of the breathing muscles, using recording pads placed on the front of the patient’s chest. Research aims to find out whether electrical activity of these muscles is significantly higher in poorly controlled asthma, and if activity is lower when control improves. Testing will focus on traditionally difficult patients to assess – children and adults who are symptomatic overnight.
