Rheumatology teaching laboratories

Location: Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust / King's College London
Award: £1 million
Award date: May 2008

Project intentions: £1 million over three years will support the renovation and refurbishment of the first floor of New Hunts House at Guy’s Hospital to create a Centre for Inflammation Pathophysiology with a focus on rheumatology. Around 8.5million in the UK are affected by some form of rheumatic disorder, such as arthritis or osteoarthritis, yet little is known about the origin of the disorders. Although the symptoms can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and biological treatments have been developed, they are very expensive and some people do not respond well to these drugs. The Charity’s funding will help create state-of-the-art laboratories in which newly recruited world class researchers can undertake investigations in this important field.
