End of Life Care
Sharing the knowledge event

On 23 October 2008, the Modernisation Initiative End of Life Care Programme co-hosted an event with the Department of Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation, King’s College London, to share recent research and examples of service improvement with staff caring for people at the end of life in Southwark and Lambeth. The audience included staff from our three local hospitals (Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital, and South London and Maudsley Mental Health Trust), primary care teams, care homes and charities working with older people.

Dr Jayne Chidgey-Clark, Director of the End of Life Care programme, described how the Modernisation Initiative, with substantial backing from the Charity, will work with colleagues and people with end of life care needs to improve services for people who are dying in Southwark and Lambeth. This programme will look at care provided within hospitals, care homes, the community and for people with dementia.

Professor Irene Higginson, Head of the Department of Palliative Care and co-chair, gave an overview of the Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care – which has received funding of £350,000 from the Charity towards new premises on Denmark Hill.

Among the speakers Professor Sube Banerjee, the UK’s dementia tsar, talked about the barriers and facilitators to providing good quality end of life care for people with dementia.
