“I am delighted that organisations working in the field across the two boroughs, and nationally, have welcomed our Modernisation Initiative which will facilitate better co-ordination across services and build upon examples of excellence to make optimum end of life care available to everybody.” |

“Although there are excellent services for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, there may not be the same provision for those coming to the end of their life due to old age or for people who may have multiple and complex health issues at the end of their life. What this programme aims to do is facilitate a discussion about death and dying amongst those working in the field, as well as those who make use of the services to help ensure care is of a consistent quality for all.” |

“The care my first husband received at St Christopher’s Hospice was terrific and I think there is so much we can learn from the palliative care services. Helping people to live life to the full through the arts and making people's last days productive is particularly important. We should not stop having fun in old age and as we near death. I hope this programme can help in these ways.” |

“The government has made a commitment to improving end of life care with a national End of Life Care strategy underway and Lord Darzi’s NHS Next Stage Review due to be published imminently. The launch of the Charity’s End of Life Care – Modernisation Initiative programme is therefore timely and will work at the grassroots to improve services, whilst also providing a valuable learning tool to inform national policy.” |
