Evelina Children's Hospital

Funding the project
The Evelina Children's Hospital opened its doors to patients in October 2005. The new hospital is a particular achievement for Guy's and St Thomas' Charity which awarded £50 million towards building the £60 million hospital - the largest grant ever made by an NHS-related charity.

The involvement of the Charity in the Evelina has been ongoing, from the selection of Hopkins Architects through the RIBA competition we funded, to the installation of artworks in line with the child-centred ethos of the building.

In addition, the Charity supports the costs of The Evelina Children's Hospital Appeal which launched a new campaign to raise £10 million in March 2004 to buy essential pieces of equipment by the time the hospital opened.

The Appeal has provided the hospital with modern paediatric intensive care unit facilities, the latest imaging equipment, materials for the operating theatres and anaesthetic rooms, Medical Day Case Unit and for teaching facilities.

Fundraising has involved staff of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, patients and their families, local communities and businesses. Stanley Fink, Chairman of the Man group is the Appeal's President, Lynn Johansen is Chairman and the Appeal is also lucky to have HRH The Princess Royal, who officially opened the hospital in June 2006 as Patron.

The New Building
The new Evelina Children's Hospital brings together services that were formerly spread across the two hospital sites. The purpose-built seven-storey, glass-fronted building enjoys dramatic views across London and of local landmarks such as Lambeth Palace and the Houses of Parliament.

The Evelina Children's Hospital serves a diverse community - over 140 languages are spoken locally - so, for practical as well as aesthetic reasons, colour, symbols and themes from the natural world will be used to help people find their way around. Children worked with a story teller to come up with the themes for the seven storeys.

Facilities and treatments
There are pull-down beds for parents staying overnight and a four-storey glass conservatory which will play host to musical and other performances funded by the Charity to help promote a healing environment. The building is naturally lit and ventilated to create a sense of being in the fresh air. There is also a café and school.

The new Evelina has 140 inpatient beds including 20 intensive care beds for the most seriously ill children; three operating theatres; a kidney dialysis unit; a full imaging service with MRI scanner, general x-ray and ultrasound; a medical day care unit and outpatients department.

Awards
The Evelina Children's Hospital has won a RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Award. Geoffrey Shepherd, Chief Executive of the Charity was delighted with the accolade: “This award pays testimony to the vision and technical expertise of Hopkin’s Architects combined with the expert team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The Charity’s Trustees are pleased to have supported this remarkable venture.”

The Evelina was also short listed for the illustrious RIBA Stirling Prize – one of the highest accolades for architecture in the world. On the night of the presentation it won the People's Choice Award through votes from the public.

The Evelina has also won the Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award, and has won the British Construction Industry (BCI) Judges’ Special Award for the building that the judges consider to be particularly inspirational.

The building won a Building Better Health Care Award in November 2006 in the Hospital Design category. This rewards the best NHS modernisation scheme that places both patients and the environment at the heart of the project.

Hopkins Architects have won a Public Space FX Award. The Awards, judged by a panel of peers, publicly recognise and reward the best in interior products and projects.
