We manage our endowment and other assets to help us tackle major health challenges
We are one of the largest health foundations in the UK relative to the size of the population we serve. Our assets, which include a substantial endowment and properties, put us in a privileged position where we can take the long-term perspective that others cannot. We manage these resources carefully to ensure they bring the best possible value to our communities.
Along with investing to generate the level of financial returns that help us fund our charitable activity, we also use our assets to create health benefits directly. For example, we invest in funds that support companies working on new health solutions, and use our owned properties to host healthcare facilities. This complements the work we do through our programmes and as a Trust charity.
We’re able to provide financial support to make real change happen. This is in part thanks to a significant endowment – the accumulation of donations over many centuries – which today amounts to around £759 million (as at March 2019). We manage and use it carefully so that we can fund great ideas that transform people’s health.
A part of our endowment is made up of property, most of which is in Lambeth and Southwark. We use our property to create returns for the endowment and also to generate direct health impact by, for example, housing healthcare facilities.
As the charity for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, we raise funds from generous supporters to make care at our hospitals even better. Our fundraising team helps staff, patients and the public to raise vital money, all of which is put back into the Trust in the way the donors intended.
