One of the things that really drives us at the Charity is sharing experiences with other places. We see it as a way of sharpening our model and widening our impact.
So it was great last week to spend time in Australia, meeting with a wide range of institutions to discuss topics of social innovation, impact investment and place-based health. I was the guest of The Difference Incubator, a brilliant Melbourne-based non-profit who specialise in new models of social change.
Australia – with its combination of large cities, isolated rural areas and both federal and state government – has developed some fascinating models of community engagement.
Over the course of the week (and in four different cities!) I met with foundations, community organisations, innovation agencies, governments and businesses to discuss these. Here are five themes from those conversations that felt really relevant to our work in the UK:
